Your First Visit to the Opera?
If you're thinking about going to an opera for the first time, first, take courage. Everyone is a bit nervous "their first time" The experience of going to an opera has a lot to offer; from passionate and tragic love stories to enjoyable comedies and even adventure and war stories. Here are some hints for the first time.
Don't worry about what to wear. Lots of people come directly from work. Dress comfortably. These days, black tie and all that , is not required. You will see everything from jeans to designer dresses.
Choose a well known opera to begin with. La Boheme, Madame Butterfly, Tosca or Carmen to name a few. You might recognise the story or the tune from some other experience. Even if it is a TV commercial! Make sure it's not too long-you won't want to see the Ring Cycle-your first time out. Most operas are about 2 or 3 hours with at least one intermission. Check before you buy your tickets.
Most opera companies use surtitles now, above the stage, so it's not necessary to understand the language the opera is sung in. It will be perfectly understandable by following the text as it is projected. Sometimes, even if the opera is sung in English they use surtitles!
Read the story or go to a pre-performance chat about the show. It can be helpful and give you a different perspective and depth to your experience.
So with a friend and if you are a student or senior check on discounts. Make sure you are on time. Most opera houses do not let latecomers in until the end of ACT 1 and that can be a long wait. Arrive early and have a drink or chat before.
ENJOY YOURSELF: Everything seems to sound better when it's sung!
